Data center industry calls for regulatory stability and competitive conditions in the face of AI boom
)
Madrid, May 9, 2025 - The Spanish data center industry insists on the need to act urgently to strengthen Spain's position as a strategic point within the European digital ecosystem. This was made clear during a meeting held on May 8 at the Club Financiero Génova in Madrid, as a prelude to the Data Centre World Madrid 2025 event, to be held on October 29 and 30 at IFEMA Madrid.
During the luncheon, structural issues that directly affect the growth of the sector were addressed, such as competitive access to energy, the adequacy of current infrastructures in the face of the advance of artificial intelligence, and the urgent need to simplify administrative and regulatory processes to facilitate the installation and expansion of data centers in the country.
Begoña Villacis, Executive Director of SPAINDC, posed a key question for the debate:
"Is Spain ready to face the growing energy needs that artificial intelligence will generate?"
This reflection underscored the urgency of providing the sector with realistic, technological and sustainable long-term energy planning.
The importance of a coherent and sustainable energy policy was also discussed. Although Spain has a high renewable generation capacity, the associated costs and regulatory burdens are an obstacle to attracting new technological investments. This causes many of them to migrate to regions with greater energy competitiveness.
In the area of sustainability, the efficient design of data centers, both in terms of infrastructure and technological components, should be a basic principle from the outset. Transparency, effective communication and improvement of the sector's image were identified as essential tools for generating social trust and institutional support.
These reflections will serve as the basis for the debates and conferences that will take place during Data Centre World Madrid 2025, an essential event for professionals, companies and institutions that drive digital transformation through a resilient, scalable and sustainable technological infrastructure.
