Data Centers: Health and Safety from the Design Phase Onward
The expansion of data centers is transforming the approach to health and safety in highly complex projects. More and more developers and operators are committed to integrating prevention from the earliest design phases, making it a strategic tool for improving efficiency, traceability, and the safety of people throughout the infrastructure’s life cycle.
In the most advanced data center projects, health and safety are no longer addressed solely during the construction phase. The incorporation of approaches such as Prevention through Design (PtD), Design for Safety, and BIM methodologies makes it possible to identify risks as early as the design stages, improve constructability, validate maintainability criteria, and ensure safe access to critical equipment and systems before construction begins.
In a mission-critical environment, where availability and operational continuity are essential factors, seemingly simple decisions related to the facility’s layout, access to technical areas, equipment replacement procedures, hoisting systems, or interfaces between MEP disciplines can have a direct impact on safety, operability, and operating costs throughout the asset’s life cycle. For this reason, safety is evolving toward a model that is fully integrated into project design and planning.
This change means that Occupational Safety and Health is no longer limited to verifying regulatory compliance or coordinating activities during construction. Its role extends to the conceptual design, detailed engineering, and pre-construction phases, involving participation in Design Risk Review, Constructability Review, and Maintainability Review processes. Early involvement of safety specialists makes it possible to identify risks associated with construction, commissioning, operation, and future maintenance activities before they are locked into design decisions that are difficult to change.
The combination of collaborative BIM environments and 3D health and safety models with preventive measures enables proactive decision-making on key issues. These integrated models facilitate the detection of interferences prior to construction, the evaluation of complex maintenance operations, the validation of access and evacuation routes, as well as the analysis of future interventions on critical equipment. In this way, Health and Safety becomes part of the same strategy as resilience, sustainability, operational efficiency, and asset lifecycle management.
From Q-safety by Quirónprevención , we promote this approach to early integration of prevention, collaborating with developers, project management consultants (PMCs), engineering firms, and contractors to incorporate safety criteria into decision-making from the earliest stages of the project. Our experience with critical infrastructure allows us to provide a vision that goes beyond regulatory compliance, helping to develop data centers that are safer, more efficient, and better prepared for reliable operation over the coming decades.
